The Friends Way route will appeal not only to all Quakers who enjoy walking, but also to walkers who have yet to discover the remarkable story of George Fox’s 1652 walk – which was pivotal in founding Quakerism. This volume combines a 49-mile walk from Sedbergh to Swarthmoor Hall, Ulverston with a 9-mile Sedbergh Quaker Trail. Its prequel Friends Way 1 went from Pendle Hill to Sedbergh.

After George Fox reached Swarthmoor Hall, he deeply impressed Margaret Fell (1614-1702) with his radical ideas. She became a committed Quaker who later became Fox’s wife and, like him, was imprisoned for her beliefs. She worked tirelessly to organise the movement, to lobby for releasing prisoners of conscience and to spread the Quaker word by her publishing. Her role has been eclipsed by her famous second husband and this book seeks to redress that balance.

This book covers her journey from mistress of Swarthmoor to mother of Quakerism, as well as celebrating Swarthmoor Hall which is still the most important centre of Quakerism in northern England. The route takes in major Quaker sites in Sedbergh and Kendal and largely follows Fox’s 1652 route. It can comfortably be completed inside one week, and contains all you need to plan and follow the route.

This book was launched at Swarthmoor Meetinghouse on 20.5.2023 with presentations from Prof Ben Pink Dandelion and both authors. Many people first walked the Margaret Fell circuit that visited her burial ground at Sunbrick, taking in Birkrigg Stone Circle before returning to the Meetinghouse for the launch.
