As many people in California and Scotland know, Thursday is John Muir
Day: Muir was born on 21 April 1838. Scotland has laid on many
celebration events along the route. There are too many to summarise
here, but some involve Californian actor Lee Stetson (aka John Muir
Live): see the VisitScotland blog or
SNH website. If you live in/near Edinburgh, two events may interest: Lee Stetson
is launching a book at Blackwells, South Bridge at 6.30 pm on Thursday 5
May and performing in character over dinner at the Sheep Heid the next
day from 7pm. Click here
for more about the Friday 6 May dinner.
We are glad to announce that our revised St Cuthbert's Way is
in stock and all those who preordered it have received their books by
now. The revisions include the new railway to Tweedbank, with walking
options to Abbotsford House as well as Melrose, revised facilities,
updated waymarking and much more. This is a walk of charm and
distinction, starring the River Tweed as well as the striding saint.
To celebrate the improved Cowal Way,
we have brought out a new edition in a handy format including 8 pages
of detailed Footprint mapping. You can "see through" the route highlight
so as to know if you will be walking on path, track or road. There are
many other updates, including new waymarking and fresh photos.
Cowal is easily accessible from Glasgow, and has amazing Highland
geology and wildlife. It was in Cowal that I had a close encounter with a
golden eagle - a moment that I will never forget.
