Title: Can we do the Kerry Way on mountain bikes?
Post by: chicomendez on January 01, 2011, 12:07:06 am
Hi there,

i'd like to bring a few friends from abroad to Kerry to do the Kerry Way as a part of our training for some ultra marathons we will be doing next summer.

Does anyone know is the Kerry Way doable on mountain bike ? Is it allowed?

Mountain biking it (even if we have to carry or push the bikes for certain sections) would allow us to get around much quicker but still get a great workout.

Thanks
CM

Hello there
Happy new year !

We've only ever looked at the Kerry Way as a walkers' route, which isn't to say that it can't or shouldn't be tackled by mountain bike riders.  Nevertheless, there are some 'hazards' that we share, the main ones being boggy ground and gates.
If you ran into a spell of wet weather then the going could become very soft and, might take away much of the enjoyment.  Taking to the tarmac as an alternative is possible in theory, but do heed our warning about road walking which applies equally to bike riding.  The roads in Kerry are particularly narrow and winding in many places, and you're likely to encounter large tour buses as well !
There are also gates to contend with - but I guess you're used to them.
As for rules and regulations - our local expert will check this one and reply as soon as possible.

Have a great ride if you do go.
Best wishes
Sandra
